Many adhesive products and solvents produce vapors that cause flash fires, resulting in severe burns. You may be putting down carpet, restoring a chair or just puttering in your basement and mistakenly think you are perfectly safe, that you have opened all the windows and that the fumes are "evaporating" and airing out and won't cause problems.
What It Is Like to Be in a Flash Fire
But these chemicals are at their deadliest in vapor form. In fact, explosive vapors sink to the floor and remain extremely flammable. When they ignite from a pilot light, spark or match, they flash across considerable distances and burn at high temperatures, causing terrible burn injuries to the body.
"My own fire injuries occurred in 1992 when I was removing carpet-backing foam from an apartment floor," says Rich Webster. "I was using a solvent called acetone. I had turned off the lights and opened the windows and waited as instructed, but the vapor crept down a long hall and found a pilot light in a remote room and roared back to the vapor source. A wall of flame quickly engulfed me. It took me years to recover. That accident was the reason I became a lawyer — to represent other people who have been burned."
